Mentor Program

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

12th September 2025, 23:59

The Sports Office of the Hungarian University of Sports Science is inviting applications for the Elite Sports Mentor Program for the first semester of the 2025/26 academic year from elite student athletes and sports professionals.

The aim of the program

The aim of the program is to mentor students who deserve special attention in their academic progress due to their activities in elite sports. Participants in the program can receive support to enable them to fulfil their academic obligations alongside their top-level sporting activities.

Application deadline:

12th September 2025, 23:59

Full-time and part-time students enrolled in undergraduate, undivided, master’s programs, who are active students and who, in addition to their studies, are active as competitive athletes or sports professionals (according to Act I of 2004 on sports).

The program operates on three levels for full-time students and two levels for part-time students.

Full-time

  1. Level: 50% exemption from class attendance + opportunity for make-up classes and consultations outside of class hours
  2. Level: 75% exemption from class attendance + opportunity for make-up classes and consultations outside of the timetable

Correspondence

  1. Level: 50% exemption from class attendance + opportunity for make-up classes and consultations outside of the timetable
  2. Level: 75% exemption from class attendance + opportunity for make-up classes and consultations outside of the class schedule

Opportunities for make-up classes and consultations outside of the timetable:

Instructors are required to take into account the student’s competitive sports activities and, depending on the level, provide the student with opportunities to complete coursework outside of the regular schedule (e.g., participation in online classes; in-person and/or online consultations with the instructor; completion of assessments at other times).

Exemption from class attendance:

Contrary to the provisions of Section 43(2) of the Study and Examination Regulations, students may be exempted from 50% or 75% of class attendance, as specified in Part 3 of the University’s Organisational and Operational Regulations, Student Requirements.

Mentor:

The progress of participants is supported by a mentor teacher, who maintains contact with students, monitors their studies, helps them meet deadlines, and liaises with lecturers. Students have the option of having a mentor teacher or a student authorised by them handle administrative matters related to their student obligations. When applying for the program, students may indicate whether they would like to receive assistance from a mentor teacher. The Review Committee decides on the provision of mentor teachers. The program operates with a limited number of mentor teachers, so not all students can receive mentor teacher assistance.

Student obligations

By applying to the program, students declare that they understand the conditions of participation and accept them as binding. Students who fail to fulfil any of their obligations related to the program may be excluded from the program.

Students are required to inform their lecturers of their participation in the program by the end of the second week of the semester and to initiate personal/online consultations with their lecturers and mentor. Students are required to contact their assigned mentor teacher and report on their academic progress at least twice a month during the academic year.

By participating in the program, students agree that they are not exempt from the assessment requirements specified in the course requirements and that they will acquire the knowledge covered in the courses despite their absence from classes.

If the student fails to maintain adequate contact with their mentor teacher and does not respond to the mentor teacher’s third written warning within three working days, the student will lose their mentor and will also be excluded from receiving mentoring assistance in the following semester.

Obligations of instructors

Teachers are obliged to provide students with the benefits offered by the Elite Sports Mentoring Program.

At the student’s request, the instructor is obliged to hold a personal/online consultation at a time other than the scheduled class time, in consultation with the student and the mentor teacher, for which they will receive remuneration in accordance with the Employment Requirements System.

Participants in the program may also claim the personal attendance discount for the camps included in the sample curriculum for each major, but the camp organisers may determine, in the interests of the professional content of the camp and the health of the students, which days the student may participate in the camp. Students are required to request information about the camp from the camp organisers in person or online by the last day of the registration period for the given semester regarding personal attendance and completion of the camp. If students do not take advantage of the travel provided by the university, they may travel to the camp at their own expense.

Applications may only be submitted electronically via the Unipoll system by the specified deadline.

Validity of applications

Applications are valid if:

  • the student has submitted the application by the specified deadline
  • the application form has been completed in full
  • all documents required for the application have been attached
  • the student meets the requirements set out in the legislation and the university’s regulations.

If any of the above is missing, the application will be automatically rejected!

During the evaluation of the application, points are awarded based on the student’s sporting achievements. The following rules apply to acceptable sporting achievements when awarding points:

  • The results achieved by the student must have been obtained in a competition system organised by the national sports (professional) association, continental or international organisation of the given sport.
  • Only results achieved after 1 January 2024 will be taken into account in the scoring, with the exception of the Olympics and international competitions in sports that are held less frequently than every two years.
  • Only results achieved in the adult and/or junior age groups below the adult age group may be taken into account in the scoring.
  • Applicants must certify their sporting results with a document authenticated by the relevant sports association.
  • Multiple sporting results may be uploaded when submitting the application, but the most favourable score will be taken into account for each applicant.
  • Only sporting achievements for which the student has a document certified by the sports association will be accepted. Sporting achievements may be certified by a national or continental/international sports association.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the student to submit a certificate with their application that clearly identifies the level, age group, ranking and other characteristics of their sporting achievement to the evaluation committee.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the student to submit a certificate to their application as another sports professional, which presents their activities at their sports organisation in sufficient detail to the evaluation committee.

In the case of elite athletes and coaches, admission to the program is determined by the opinion of the head of the relevant sports department and the scoring system, while in the case of other sports professionals, the decision is made on an individual basis.

In the scoring system, different sports have different multipliers and different competition results have different point values. During the application process, students may upload multiple sports results, but in each case, the result with the highest point value will be counted.

Prior to the evaluation of the sports results, the Sports Office sends the students’ applications to the relevant sports departments for review, whose supportive opinion is necessary but not an exclusive condition for the success of the application.

Applications are assessed by the Sports Office with the approval of the director of the Sports Institute and the vice-rector. In the case of other sports professionals, the committee’s decision is not based exclusively on the following criteria: the nature of the sport, the domestic and international success of the student’s sports organisation, and the position held in the sports organisation.
