Residence Permit

Stay informed about current regulations. Rules and procedures may change during your stay. It is your responsibility to stay up to date, as lack of awareness does not exempt you from compliance. Visit the official website of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing to learn about the latest regulations.

You can download relevant forms from HERE. (Before submitting a form make sure you have filled out the correct one.)

Third-country nationals, who submitted their visa application at a Hungarian Consulate abroad and hold a type D visa, must do the following:

  1. Travel to Hungary with the type D visa – check the date of validity!
The visa is valid for 3 months counting from the date of the decision. You cannot enter Hungary with an expired visa. After arriving in Hungary the validity changes, it will be valid for 30 days counting from the date of entry.
If you cannot arrive in Hungary before 20 September, make sure to contact us!
  2. You can claim your residence permit card at the university. There’s no need to submit a separate application for a residence permit after your arrival. Your original Type D visa application already included the request for the residence permit. You must always keep the permit card with you. In case you lose it, or it gets stolen, contact the authorities immediately.
Pay attention to its expiry date and start the extension procedure in due time.
  3. Your e-certificate of accommodation will be sent to you electronically by the Embassy. If you do not receive it till your arrival in Hungary, contact the National Directorate-General of Aliens Policing (the Immigration Office).

EEA citizens planning to stay for more than 90 days in Hungary have to apply for the issuance of a registration certificate and for the registration of residence. You need to submit your request with the required documents online on the EnterHungary website.

Always submit your residence permit extension application before your current permit expires. You should begin the process at least 30 days prior to the expiry date. If you are unable to gather all the required documents in time, it is better to submit an incomplete application than to miss the deadline. However, this is only acceptable if the missing documents are due to circumstances beyond your control.

The steps of extension are the following:

  1.  You have to submit your application for extension of residence permit through the EnterHungary website.
  2.  Select “Application for residence permit”, then click “Study or student mobility”.
  3.  Fill out all the obligatory fields.
  4.  Upload all the mandatory attachments to your EnterHungary case. Make sure to use up to date documents. You can check the list of documents you must upload HERE.
  5.  Pay the procedural fee (if not exempted) through EnterHungary.
  6.  After submitting your application, you must visit the Directorate within 15 days for giving biometrical data.

Always check the status of your application and messages received from the Directorate as if you miss any deadline, your case will be automatically deleted. To check messages you must log in to your profile, the Directorate does not send emails about updates.

If you move to a new accommodation, you must report the change of address via EnterHungary within 3 days’ time.

  1. Third-Country Nationals might report the relocation (change) of address ONLY ONLINE via EnterHungary.
  2. You will receive the new e-certificate via EnterHungary. You will find it in your storage.
  3. When submitting application for the residence permit, it is also possible to report a new address. However, please remember, if the relocation/change of address is earlier than the application, then you should do the report separately.
  4. If your accommodation has not been changed since you applied at the Embassy, please do not apply for it. In this case you will get your e-certificate automatically.

If the incident happened in Hungary, apply for the replacement of the permit via the EnterHungary website.

If the permit was lost or stolen abroad, you have to apply at the Hungarian consulate in the respective country.

You must have a valid passport to complete the replacement application. If your passport is also lost, you must first replace the passport before applying for the residence permit replacement.
