Program overview

The Stipendium Hungaricum Sports Scholarship is designed for international students who’ve achieved outstanding results in sports. It gives talented athletes the chance to study at Hungarian universities while continuing their sports careers.

By supporting top-level foreign athletes, the program helps promote competitive and university sports in Hungary – and inspires the next generation. It also helps athletes prepare for life after sports and highlights the importance of sports within higher education.

Application procedure

Step 1

Applicants submit their application to the relevant international sports federation (either World Aquatics (AQUA) or the International Judo Federation (IJF)).

Step 2

The international sports federations review and rank the applications, then forward the list of nominated candidates to Tempus Public Foundation.

Step 3

Tempus Public Foundation contacts the nominated applicants, who must then submit their application through the application portal, based on the feedback received.

Step 4

University admission procedure begins. Important: Being nominated by a sports federation does not guarantee admission. Universities make their decision based on their own admission criteria.

Step 5

The final decision on scholarship awards is made by Tempus Public Foundation.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Tuition-free education
  • Monthly stipend (for bachelor’s and master’s students):
    HUF 43,700/month (approx. EUR 110) for living expenses, for 12 months a year
  • Accommodation contribution:
    Free dormitory placement or HUF 40,000/month (approx. EUR 100) toward rental costs
    (Note: This may not cover full rent, especially in Budapest.)
  • Medical insurance for the duration of your studies
